ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - Croatia's businessmen generated 10.8 billion kuna (EUR1.44 bln) in profits in 2002, a staggering 330 percent increase from 2001, according to consolidated business results, it was said on Tuesday at the
presentation of "The 400 Biggest", a special publication of the Economic Bulletin and the Financial Agency (FINA).

billion kuna (EUR1.44 bln) in profits in 2002, a staggering 330
percent increase from 2001, according to consolidated business
results, it was said on Tuesday at the presentation of "The 400
Biggest", a special publication of the Economic Bulletin and the
Financial Agency (FINA). #L#
This is the ninth analysis and chart of Croatia's 400 most
successful companies on which the three top positions remain
unchanged -- the oil company INA is number one, followed by Croatian
Telecom (HT) and the HEP power utility company, which have been
changing places at number two and three.
The analysis and chart were made on the basis of data from the Annual
Financial Reports Registry. Reports were submitted to FINA by
63,661 companies.
Presenting last year's results, Zarko Primorac said 2002 saw the
continuation of a positive economic growth trend.
Last year was the second consecutive year in which Croatia's
economy recorded positive results. The consolidated profit in 2001
was 2.5 billion kuna.
The consolidated results show that Croatian businessmen made 392
billion kuna in revenues in 2001, up 15.5 percent from 2001, while
expenditures went up 13.1 percent to 378 billion kuna.
Last year 45,096 companies (71 percent) operated in the black,
generating 22.4 billion kuna in profits after paying tax, which is
53.8 percent more than in 2001.
Twenty-nine percent of all companies (18,465) recorded losses in
2002, generating 11.6 billion kuna in total losses, a decrease of
3.5 percent from 2001.
With four billion kuna, the drugs company Pliva is the first in
terms of profits after paying tax, followed by HT with 1.8 billion,
and the Brodosplit shipyard with 1.6 billion.
INA is first on the list in terms of export-generated profits,
followed by Pliva, Brodosplit, the Uljanik shipyard, and Ericcson
Nikola Tesla.
Croatian Railways has the highest number of employees (16,051),
followed by Croatian Post (11,136), INA (11,048), HT (10,582), and
HEP (10,036).
