ZAGREB, June 24 (Hina) - Fifty-five drug addicts died of overdose in
Croatia last year and an increase in the number of marijuana and
synthetic drug users, especially ecstasy, has been noted, the head
of the government's office for the prevention of drug abuse, Ante
Barbir, said on Tuesday on the occasion of International Day
Against Drug Abuse, June 26. #L#
Barbir said the number of newly-registered drug addicts decreased
slightly -- 764 -- last year compared to the year before, when 1,066
were registered. The real number of death cases connected to drugs
is at least three times higher than 55, since narcotics affect
health much deeper and drug-related deaths should not be tied only
with overdoses, he said.
It is worrying that for the first time, three people in Croatia died
after taking ecstasy, while police confiscated 110,632 ecstasy
pills, an increase of 752.6 percent in relation to the year before.
With the aim of preventing the consumption of synthetic drugs, the
government's office is preparing "standards for organising techno
and rave parties", to make it possible for non-governmental
organisations to distribute fliers with warnings and information
for young partygoers.
