MESIC SAYS GOTOVINA WILL BE ALLOWED TO SPEAK WITH INVESTIGATORS

ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - General Ante Gotovina will be allowed to speak with investigators of the Hague's UN war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and whether this happens in Croatia or at The Hague is just a technical matter, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said Monday in reply to reporters' questions after giving out medals on the occasion of Statehood Day, to be marked Wednesday.
#L# Mesic confirmed he had spoken with ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte about Gotovina over the phone on Friday. "General Gotovina will be allowed to speak with ICTY investigators before he answers any questions from a judge. This will be an interview as others before him had a long time ago, for which Gotovina was never given the opportunity. The conversation with Del Ponte confirmed that the issue of whether the interview will take place here or in The Hague is only a technical one," Mesic said. The president also told reporters he had no information that Major General Luka Dzanko's status as witness would be changed to that of ICTY indictee, as some Croatian media wrote. (hina) lml sb
