The party president, Ivo Sanader, recalled the HDZ had been founded
at the Jarun soccer club 14 years ago and in its first ten years of
existence, led by the late first Croatian President Franjo Tudjman,
the party had achieved great results and the most important
political goal of the Croatian people -- the creation of the
Croatian state.
"At three parliamentary elections in the 1990s, Croatian voters
gave us the mandate and we are very proud of that period," Sanader
said.
He added that after Tudjman's death and defeat in the parliamentary
elections on 3 January 2000, the HDZ had gone into opposition and
passed through a very difficult period of consolidation.
"Today, after this successful process, the HDZ is again the
strongest party," Sanader said.
