Prime Minister Ivica Racan yesterday urged all refugees who are
Croatian citizens to return to the country and make use of the
government's accommodation model in exchange for tenancy rights.
Djukic assesses there could be up to 50,000 applications for such
accommodation. The government has estimated there could be more,
but that 5,000 citizens could meet prerequisites at the most.
It is difficult to believe that the government will succeed in
implementing the decision by 2006 because who will secure the funds
is questionable, Djukic said.
Commenting on the recent Pope John Paul II's pastoral visit to
Croatia, Djukic said the pope's messages during his three visits to
the country had not made much of an impact except for expressions of
admiration towards the Holy Father.
