In an effort to set up a market economy, Croatia abolished social
ownership long ago and it "cannot reintroduce it now in order to
return tenancy rights, which derive from social ownership", Mesic
said.
Tenancy rights cannot be returned, but people should be provided
with accommodation, i.e. the possibility to obtain permanent
housing. How to organise and carry this out depends on our
capabilities but we can do it, Mesic said when asked by reporters
during a visit to the LURA factory to comment on requests to give
tenancy rights back to Serb refugees.
He dismissed claims that there was a difference of opinion between
him and the government with regard to solving this issue.
