After the meeting with the pontiff, Marovic held a brief news
conference in St Peter's Square where he said that he hoped that the
Catholic and Orthodox Churches would prepare the trip of the Holy
Father to Serbia and Montenegro for the next year.
Marovic said the two countries were in Europe and it would be normal
that Pope John Paul II visit them, too. Italian news agencies
interpreted this statement as Marovic's invitation to the pope to
visit Serbia-Montenegro.
