ZAGREB, May 29 (Hina) - The Zagreb Municipal Court on Thursday received a lawsuit from the wife and son of the killed Milan Levar, who are seeking damages of almost one million kuna (EUR133,000) from the state which, they claim, did nothing to prevent Levar being murdered. #L# Levar was a U.N. war crimes tribunal witness of crimes against Serb civilians in the central Croatian town of Gospic. He was killed by a planted explosive device in this town in 2000. The lawsuit, submitted by attorney Branko Seric, says Levar was killed "as a consequence of an act of violence and terrorism", which the state was obliged to prevent. The government assumed the obligation to protect Levar based on the law on internal affairs, and pursuant to a request by the Hague- based tribunal which demanded protection for the Levar family back in 1998, Seric said. All state bodies, "from the President to the interior ministry" were informed about threats against Levar's life, he added. Vesna and Leon Levar are asking 500,000 kuna from the state as compensation for the mental anguish sustained from the loss of their husband and father, as well as fear. Leon Levar is also seeking compensation of 2,500 kuna per month due to his losing his father's financial support and assistance. Despite an extensive police investigation, Levar's murderer was never discovered. (hina) lml sb
