Addressing reporters after a session of the Social Democratic
Party's (SDP) Presidency on Monday evening, Racan said the SDP
advocated stricter penalties for those not complying with
regulations on bonuses for work on Sundays.
Racan dismissed claims by some media that the SDP was the only party
in favour of work on Sundays, stating the party was in favour of
discouraging it and introducing stricter penalties for employers
not paying adequate wages for work on Sundays.
In solving this issue, one should adopt the best solutions from
other European countries, Racan said.
A campaign to ban the work of shops on Sundays was launched a month
ago by trade unions and the Catholic Church and was supported by
some employers and parliamentary parties.
Asked to comment on a rise in the party's rating from 13 to 16.5%, as
reported today by a daily, Racan said he was not impressed with the
data, however, one would have to count on the SDP's good rating in
the elections.
Party sources say the SDP is conducting a major field research on
party rating in constituencies and its results are expected in mid-
June.
The sources believe that the SDP could reach a rating of 20% before
summer. According to unofficial sources, this is the minimum
required voter support.
