to prohibit foreigners from fishing in Croatian territorial waters
was supported on Wednesday in the Sabor by opposition benches. #L#
The benches of the ruling coalition parties did not give their
opinion on the bill. The bill gained support from the Croatian Bloc
(HB) and Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS).
Giving its support, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) stressed
that HSP-sponsored amendments to the law on sea fishing could not
significantly change the current state of affairs keeping in mind
an agreement with Slovenia on cross-border co-operation.
The government's policies of making concessions to Slovenia, and in
many other areas, has not resulted in any favourable solution in
favour of Croatia's interests. As such the proposed amendments will
not resolve these problems either. It is necessary to go wider and
to proclaim a commercial belt, MP Drago Krpina said on behalf of the
HDZ bench.
HSP believes that the existing sea fishing law is in contradiction
to the convention on maritime rights which, as an HSP MP Tonci Tadic
pointed out, considers fishing by foreigners in territorial waters
as damaging to a country. Tadic added that according to the
convention, foreign fishermen are allowed to catch fish only in
commercial belts and only if the host country permits this and a
maximum load is set.
The Sabor also discussed a bill by the Croatian Peasant' Party (HSS)
on amendments to firefighting.
HSS proposed measures that would categorise fire fighting units
according to technical equipment and qualified commanders while
the amendments would not influence the current financing methods
for fire fighters.
MPs ended today's work with this discussion and tomorrow they will
continue the parliamentary sitting with a discussion on a bill on
market competitiveness and a final bill on consumer protection.
