The battle at Batina in the late 1944 was a turning point in freeing
this part of Europe from fascism, which, indeed, happened on 9 May
1945, Rade Bulat, a member of the Croatian Association of Anti-
Fascist Fighters, said at the ceremony.
Around 1,300 anti-fascist fighters, mostly Ukrainian soldiers,
members of the Red Army, were killed in the battle. Their remains
were buried beneath the monument to the Batina victims.
Wreaths were also laid by envoys of the Ukrainian, Serbian and
Montenegrin embassies.
