The book was praised by historian Ivo Banac and writer Zdravko Zima,
the book's consulting editors. Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic
also congratulated Goldstein for his achievement with the book.
Special value in the book was noted as being that it is founded on
facts from the beginning of Croatian history until its application
for membership to the European Union in February this year. The book
does not contain any unnecessary ideological or sentimental
presentations which are often prevalent in other Croatian history
books particularly those regarding contemporary history.
Banac said that the book was a true introduction into a period of
sober Croatian historiography and that it served as a herald to the
national past.
Goldstein is not embedded in false idols but historical facts,
Zdravko Zima said, adding that historical science often fell victim
to being divided between the left and right.
President Mesic said that a book like Goldstein's had been lacking
in Croatia. He warned of the large amount of subjectiviness and
politicising by some authors.
The book is particularly recommended as a school textbook. "
"They who speak in squares and streets with nostalgia about the
Independent State of Croatia (NDH) and without shame praise that
quisling state are not to be blamed because they have been taught
from textbooks full of falsities and lies," President Mesic.
