The small grants are part of the international Karst Ecosystems
Conservation (KEC) Project. This was said at the presentation of
the programme by the World Bank and Croatia's Zoning and
Environmental Protection Ministry. The grants will be made
available to physical and legal persons and various non-
governmental organisations.
KEC refers to the Karst regions in the Lika-Senj, Primorje-Gorski
Kotar, Karlovac, Split-Dalmatia, and Sibenik-Knin counties.
The aim of the project is to protect biological environments and the
variety of the Karst and ecological systems. The grants will only be
given to ecologically acceptable projects envisaging lawn
management, the ecological production of plants, the preservation
of autochtonous animals and plants, facilities for the
manufacturing of wool, honey, meat, milk, fruit, and vegetables,
the promotion of ecological and rural tourism, as well as
traditional handicrafts and authentic local souvenirs. The
projects are also open to various potholing societies involved in
the protection of caves or their preparation for tourist purposes.
