The bridge was initially constructed in the 16th century by Turks,
under whose authority Bosnia was at the time. It was destroyed by
the Croat Defence Council (HVO) artillery during the Croat-Muslim
conflicts in the 1990s Homeland War.
The reconstruction of the bridge is financed by international
institutions and governments of several countries. The Croatian
government became involved in the reconstruction last year with a
500,000 dollar donation.
