During the talks, Wyrsch thanked Croatia on its assistance and
cooperation with the UNHCR so far. She stressed she appreciated
Mesic's commitment to solving the return issue not only in Croatia,
but in the region as well, the statement said.
The UNHCR official expressed interest in the SEEPC summit held in
Belgrade on Wednesday, which Mesic attended as an observer, as well
as in Mesic's initiative regarding the return of refugees.
Mesic told Wyrsch that he had presented this initiative to the
president of Serbia and Montenegro, Svetozar Marovic, and added
that he would do the same at Saturday's meeting of a joint Croatian-
Bosnian cooperation council.
The President's Office reported that Mesic said he hoped that the
three countries would harmonise their standpoints on the
Declaration of Principles of Return by late May when the
declaration could be signed.
UNHCR representatives told Mesic that by the middle of next year
their activities in former Yugoslav states would be gradually
reduced, particularly in the field work, but that the UNHCR office
would remain in Zagreb even after the said time.
