Commenting on the situation regarding human rights and ethnic
minorities' rights in the Croatian Danube area, Klaric, who on
Monday visited the region, advocated that young people should not
live in separate environments, with isolation and ghettoisation on
the ethnic basis.
Pointing to the importance of paying attention to specific features
of national minorities, Klaric said there was neither
discrimination nor segregation in any programme of the government
or local authorities. "This exists as an individual situation and
result of the war and legacy and it is not the product of the spirit
of the Croatian people," he said.
Klaric's visit to Vukovar-Srijem County was organised within a
project entitled "the activities of the institution of ombudsman -
a scheme of support to the institution of ombudsman".
The project has been drawn up in cooperation with the OSCE
(Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) mission and
with the support of the Norwegian government with the aim of the
ombudsman establishing direct contacts with members of local
communities, in particular with members of more vulnerable
groups.
