Interior ministry spokeswoman Zinka Bardic on Friday night did not
wish to comment on the information until the criminal investigation
is completed.
About mid-week the government reported the theft of four valuable
paintings stolen from the government building.
The artist of three of the paintings is Menci Clement Crncic, while
the fourth painting is less valuable and was created by artist Likan
Haueise Gustav.
According to unofficial sources close to the police a man,
suspected of the theft, was arrested. The suspect has been an
employee in the government for the past twenty-nine years and
married to a descendant of Menci Clement Crncic. He apparently
planned the theft for some time.
According to information from the government, of the 292 paintings
in the building, 49 are valuable works of art.
The total value of the paintings and furniture in the government
building is estimated at some 12.3 million kuna.
