PM SAYS INVESTIGATION INTO DJINDJIC'S MURDER PROCEEDING WELL

BELGRADE, March 26 (Hina) - This year Serbia is facing a historic opportunity to triumph over crime and reduce it to the level of the most secure countries, Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic said at a news conference in Belgrade on Wednesday. #L# He said that the investigation into the assassination of his predecessor, Zoran Djindjic, was proceeding well. Most of the Zemun Clan criminal gang members have been arrested, "only those at the top of the pyramid remain at large, and they should not expect to avoid trial," he said. Zivkovic stressed that neighbouring and other European countries were participating in the operation led by the Serbian police. "The fact that we received information which will hold up in court" is very important, he said. The people in question are criminals whose speciality is drug trafficking, and lists of people in Serbia and abroad with whom they cooperated have been found, the prime minister said. Many unsolved homicides, including politically motivated ones, are connected to the Zemun Clan. The ongoing investigation will show if they were connected with any political parties. Zivkovic confirmed that the Special Operations Unit, known as the Red Berets, had been disbanded. Its members who were not involved in crimes will be transferred to other units, he said. (hina) lml sb
