Jakovcic told reporters the Italian Union could significantly
contribute to overcoming possible problems on the Slovene border
once the Shengen regime was introduced and that Istria's specific
circumstances should be taken into account exactly because of its
Italian minority.
Italian Union president Maurizio Tremul said Istria County had so
far demonstrated great care for members of the Italian minority,
and expressed gratitude to Jakovcic for the county's support in a
recent dispute with Trieste's National University. He added that
the county prefect had backed a proposal that the Croatian election
law include double voting rights for national minorities.
