During a debate before the election, Montenegrin opposition MPs
said Marovic was a member of Djukanovic's party, which advocates
Montenegro's independence, while Serbian opposition MPs, mostly
members of Vojislav Seselj's Radicals, resented Marovic having
declared himself a Montenegrin, as they do not recognise the
existence of the Montenegrin nation.
Marovic, born in 1955, held numerous political posts, from those in
the former Yugoslavia's youth organisations to party functions in
the past several years. Until last year's extraordinary
parliamentary elections in Montenegro, he was president of the
Montenegrin Assembly.
