Schwimmer participated in a diplomatic forum of the Institute for
International Relations where he held a lecture on the topic "The
Role of the Council of Europe in a United Europe: Relations with an
Enlarged European Union".
Europe is moving, Europe is passing through the process of
transformation and Croatia's application to access the European
Union represents a strong signal in that regard, Schwimmer said at
the lecture.
Pointing out that he was speaking on behalf of the Council of
Europe, referring to it as the poor older brother of the European
Union, Schwimmer said that he warmly welcomed the Croatian
government resoluteness to implement reforms and meet EU
standards.
Schwimmer said that co-operation with the International Criminal
Tribunal in The Hague, regional co-operation is the key for all
countries in the region.
He said he encouraged the Croatian government in its co-operation
with the ICTY and especially welcomed the recent statement by
President Stjepan Mesic in which he supported unconditional co-
operation with the Tribunal.
Schwimmer also spoke about the importance of regional co-operation
which, as he said, was necessary in the entire Europe.
