PM COMMENTS ON UNION STRIKE, PRICE OF ELECTRICITY

ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan said on Friday the protest rally staged by unions yesterday did not eliminate the need for further talks on a possible compromise in connection with changes to the Labour Act. #L# Talking to journalists after visiting the Ericsson Nikola Tesla company, Racan said he was an optimist, and that it was the unions' democratic right to protest as they did yesterday. The protest was held in front of the government building against changes to the Labour Act, which union leaders said they would not accept as they were an attempt to restrict workers' rights. Asked if there was a chance that the price of electricity might go down now that Croatia should start receiving it from the Krsko nuclear power plant, co-owned with Slovenia, which journalists estimate covers 17 percent of Croatia's consumption, Racan said the government would support price cuts if they were possible.
