The daily cited a statement by a Hrtkovci resident, currently
living in Podravska Slatina, who confirmed that problems in
Hrtkovci had begun on May 6, 1992, after a visit by Serb radical
leader Vojislav Seselj, who at a rally read out a list of
undesirable Croat and Hungarian villagers. According to her, Serbs
who tried to protect the Croats were also threatened.
The Novi Sad daily stated the example of the Srijem region village
of Beska, from where Croats were also forced out, and published data
according to which 2,150 Croats lived in the village in 1991, while
today the number of Croat villagers is only 750.
