"The IDS is convinced that the spirit that existed on January 3
three years ago has not died, but that it can be renewed in an effort
to prevent the arrival of the right, particularly the extremist
right, from coming to power," party president Ivan Jakovcic said at
a press conference in Pula marking the 13th anniversary of the
party's founding.
"Despite some failures and oversights, this government has to be
given credit for succeeding in bringing Croatia closer to the
European Union, to which it will officially apply for membership in
the next few days," Jakovcic said and added that membership to the
EU would vitally influence both the economy and society.
Asked by journalists about accusations by the Istrian Democratic
Forum that the IDS was taking part in secret negotiations with
Israeli partners regarding the possible construction of a weapons
factory in Istria, Jakovcic dismissed them with disgust.
He pointed out that from the very beginning the IDS had promoted
peace, that such fabrications were morbid, and that no weapons
factory would be built in Istria as long as the IDS was in power.
