ZAGREB, Feb 10 (Hina) - Matrix Croatica (Matica Hrvatska) marked its 161st anniversary with a music programme at its new offices in Zagreb on Monday.

Matrix Croatica is the oldest Croatian institution, but it is also a
modern institution which need not be ashamed of its past, nor afraid
of the future, president Igor Zidic said. He stressed the
importance of organised work with young people for the
association's future.
Matrix Croatica was founded on February 10, 1842 under the name
"Matica ilirska" and its first president was Janko Draskovic.
At an assembly in 1874 Ivan Kukuljevic was elected president, new
regulations were adopted and the term "ilirska" left out, since
when the association has been called Matrix Croatica (Matica
hrvatska).
