ZAGREB, Feb 6 (Hina) - According to information from the State
Bureau of Statistics, funding earmarked for research and
development in Croatia in 2001 totalled 234 million euros. #L#
This data was collected in companies, the state sector and
institutions of higher education.
According to the main areas of science, most funding went to natural
sciences - 41 percent, followed by technical sciences - 22 percent
and 14.8 percent for social studies.
According to activities as categorised by international
methodology (Frascati), most funding was earmarked for research
and development - 58.8 percent, followed by public administration,
education, health care and welfare combined - 35.1 percent.
A total of 11,272 people are employed full time in research and
development in Croatia. Of this number, 66.5 percent are
researchers. The remainder are qualified and technical associates,
administrative personnel, and the like.
A total of 45.2 percent of researchers have doctoral degrees while
20.9 percent have master's degrees.
According to international statistical demands, which can be
expressed by using the equivalent of full employment, of the 7,459
researchers in Croatia, the productivity measured equalled human
potential equivalent to 6,262 researchers.
Of a total number of 7,180 published research papers, the majority
were from the area of social sciences - 25.4 percent; technical
sciences - 24.6 percent, and natural sciences - 13.7 percent.
According to the type of research papers, most were applied - 44
percent, while basic research accounted for 39.8 percent of all
papers.
The Bureau of Statistics reported that 33.1 percent of all research
papers were published in various publications in 2001.
