Quoting sources in Zagreb, the Italian newspaper said more than
1,300 requests had been filed for the restitution of property which
ex-Yugoslavia's authorities took from Italian refugees after World
War Two.
The requests were submitted under Croatia's law on
denationalisation and come from Italy, Germany, Slovenia,
Australia, and Austria. They seek the return of houses, land,
forests, and ships in Istria.
Il Piccolo says a Croatian-Italian commission should consider the
requests at an upcoming meeting in Zagreb. It adds that Italian
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, during a recent visit to Zagreb,
discussed the restitution of property to Italian refugees with his
Croatian counterpart Ivica Racan.
Brazzoduro says the number of requests is as expected and that
during negotiations the Croatian side should not have major
problems in granting those which are valid.
