WASHINGTON, Jan 31 (Hina) - Globalisation can help Croatia use the
knowledge and skills of its people and its potential for the
development of tourism and the production of healthy food more
efficiently, Croatia's Ambassador to the USA, Ivan Grdesic, said in
Washington on Friday. #L#
Grdesic was speaking about Croatia's economic and social prospects
in conditions of globalisation at a debate on globalisation,
organised by the US non-government organisation World Learning.
The ambassador said that researches showed that small and medium-
sized countries were more open to globalisation processes than big
ones.
"People and knowledge are the key factor of development in Croatia,
a medium-sized country with limited resources. Speedy and cheap
communications and transport remove the sense of isolation and make
it possible for Croatian experts and scientists to exchange views
with their colleague around the world and evaluate ideas," Grdesic
said.
Grdesic believes that globalisation gives Croatia the opportunity
to use its advantages in tourism and the production of healthy
food.
The debate, which was dedicated to sustainable development,
permanent education and the fight against poverty in conditions of
globalisation, also included other ambassadors to the USA as well
as representatives of the US administration and non-government
organisations.
World Learning was founded in 1932 to encourage international
education, the exchange of students and experts and global
development.
The organisation has been present in Croatia since 1994, where it
will stay until 2005. It organises the training of and visits to
other countries by Croatian experts and activists from areas of
interest to the US Agency for International Development.
