ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - A Dutch medical commission has confirmed the
diagnosis of Croatian doctors and established that retired
Croatian General Janko Bobetko was unfit to stand trial before the
U.N. war crimes tribunal (ICTY) in The Hague, Croatia's daily
Vjesnik reports in its Saturday's issue, citing sources in The
Hague and Croatian government. #L#
General Bobetko's condition makes it impossible for him to answer
to charges in the indictment issued against him by the tribunal for
war crimes committed during the Medak Pocket liberation operation
in 1993, and even less possible for him to endure the trial.
A possible transfer to The Hague could prove hazardous for his life,
Vjesnik cites an as yet unofficial diagnosis made by two Dutch
doctors who visited Bobetko in Zagreb in the middle of the month,
the daily reports.
Vjesnik further notes that the postponement of proceedings was
temporary and Bobetko will be examined again in three to four
months.
