interviews by Dr. Milan Kangrga, "Nationalism or Democracy", was
presented in Zagreb on Thursday. #L#
The book includes 23 texts, most of which were published in the
1990s in Croatian papers and magazines.
"Nationalism does not recognise the concept of man and being a Croat
does not also mean being a man," said Kangrga.
The editor of the book, Dr. Stipe Suvar, said the texts were "very
inspired interpretations of great thinkers from Socrates to Marx
and the revolutionary spirit of Jesus Christ".
Ivan Kuvacic said Kangrga's texts showed that people who had
brought Croatia to Europe's door were expelled from the public life
in the name of nationalism.
Kangrga said there could be no doubt about whether nationalism
could be good. "The two terms are mutually exclusive. Either
nationalism or democracy and rights for all," Kangrga said, adding
that Croatian nationalism was rooted in the Ustasha ideology as
Serbian nationalism was rooted in the Chetnik ideology.
"I was appalled at how much nationalism was revived in the past ten
years and I thought that it was my mission to fight that evil," he
said.
Kangrga was born in Zagreb in 1923. He taught ethics at Zagreb's
Faculty of Philosophy and was one of the founders of the Praxis
magazine and president of the Croatian Society of Philosophy. He is
the author of a number of books.
