Addressing a session of the party's presidency in the eastern town
of Beli Manastir, Ivo Sanader said the Croatian Democratic Union
(HDZ) did not consent to the policy of social insensitivity the
government was waging in formerly war-struck areas.
Stating that life in those areas was "very bad", Sanader said the
HDZ, if it regained power, would change the law on such areas, known
as areas of special state concern, as well as the law on war
veterans.
Vladimir Seks, the president of the HDZ bench in parliament, said
the party was satisfied with the current election law and objected
to having it changed. Changes would enable the incumbent government
to have another term of office, he said.
Seks said "there are indications" that the current authorities
"will try to stay in power through force and abuse", which he said
could be seen in the crises of authority in some local self-
government units where the ruling coalition's parties were in
rule.
