ZAGREB, Jan 7 (Hina) - Representatives of the Union of Mine Removal
Experts who staged a protest in front of the government building on
Monday and government representatives agreed to hold a meeting at
the Interior Ministry on January 10 to discuss a new humanitarian
mine clearing bill. #L#
Some thirty bomb technicians organised the protest because even
after three years a law on humanitarian mine clearing has not been
passed to regulate their rights. Another reason for staging the
protest was a suggestion that their working hours be extended from
five to eight per day.
The union opposes the extension of working hours, claiming that
this would increase the risk of injury as well as the state's
expenses for their care.
The technicians request the establishment of a commission to draw
up a humanitarian mine clearing bill, which would include union
representatives and bomb technicians, as well as that the bill be
forwarded into parliamentary procedure by March or April at the
latest.
