PRISTINA, Jan 5 (Hina) - Saturday's murders of Lt. Col. Tahir Zemaj,
one of the commanders of the former Kosovo Liberation Army, his son
and cousin received extensive coverage in Kosovo's Albanian
language dailies on Sunday. #L#
The murders, which occurred in Pec, were the top news of all
Albanian electronic media in Kosovo as well.
"The puzzling murders in Pec have no end. Tahir Zemaj was killed
together with two family members," reads the editorial headline of
the Pristina-based Koha Ditore. This independent daily says Zemaj,
his son Enis and cousin Hasan were killed in Pec when two moving
vehicles opened fire at Zemaj's car. He was shot several times with
a large-calibre gun, while the attackers drove away.
Koha Ditore recalls that Zemaj's last public appearance was at a
Pristina trial last December as a key witness against five members
of a group known as Dukagjini, who were found guilty and sentenced
to long jail terms for kidnapping, mistreating and killing four
Kosovo Albanians .
According to Bota Sot daily, Zemaj had been the victim of several
assassination attempts in the last two years. Zemaj was a staunch
advocate of the Kosovo Democratic Alliance and Kosovo President
Ibrahim Rugova, the newspaper says.
The latest murders have increased tensions in Kosovo and created
insecurity in Pec, Bota Sot says, adding a police investigation is
underway and that the motives of the assault are still unknown.
