The letter was sent to President Stjepan Mesic, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, Sabor Speaker Vladimir Seks, and representatives of the Croatian Bishops' Conference, the central cultural institution "Matica Hrvatska", and the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
"What is the meaning of trade in transcripts and other classified documents from the President's Office? Isn't it humiliating to tell jokes about the first Croatian president and make statements such as the one about Croatia having never been at war with Montenegro," reads the letter.
The veterans also wonder who the media in Croatia are actually serving and why they are not promoting patriotism.
They are particularly dissatisfied with the treatment of war heroes, including generals who they say established the Croatian army and liberated Croatia under the leadership of the late president and the late defence minister, Franjo Tudjman and Gojko Susak.
"We are aware that by prosecuting them, the Hague tribunal is prosecuting all of us," the veterans say requesting a referendum on cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal, which they state was supported by more than 400,000 citizens.
