BELGRADE, Nov 22 (Hina) - The trial of persons accused of the 1991 war crime at Ovcara, eastern Croatia, resumed before the Special War Crimes Court in Belgrade on Monday.

Seventeen persons are accused of the killing of at least 192 Croatian prisoners of war.

Witness Mirko Gavrilovic said that he saw only 10-15 members of the Territorial Defence, armed with automatic rifles, before the hangar at Ovcara where the prisoners of war, who were later killed, were stationed.

Gavrilovic, who in late 1991 was a Yugoslav Army (JNA) reservist stationed in the eastern town of Vukovar, said his unit was transferred to Ovcara immediately after the fall of Vukovar on 17 or 18 November 1991, with the task to guard the command of a light artillery division, which was stationed in a house 500 m from the hangar, because the entire unit which had been there had deserted.

The witness said that on the second day of his stay at Ovcara, his superior Jovan Novkovic, who today did not appear in court to testify, called him to accompany him to the hangar. He added there were 10-15 armed men in civilian clothing in front of the hangar, who told them they had orders that no one could enter the hangar.

Gavrilovic said he was on guard for two hours that night and could hear a machine working and random fire. He added the next day he heard that the prisoners of war had been killed.
