VUKOVAR, Nov 20 (Hina) - The St. Philip and Jacob's Franciscan monastery in Vukovar was returned on Saturday 3,833 old and rare books which were taken from the monastery after the Serb occupation of the eastern town in 1991.

The books were brought from St. John Capistrano's monastery in Zemun, Serbia, where they had been stored for years.

Expressing joy at the return of the books, guardian Zlatko Spehar said the Vukovar monastery had about 17,000 valuable books before the war, the oldest dating back to 1501.

Assistant Culture Minister Branka Sulc said the rest of the works of art taken from eastern Croatia during the war to Serbia were expected to be returned by the end of the year.
