VUKOVAR MONASTERY TO SERBIA DURING THE WAR RETURNEDVUKOVAR, Nov 20 (Hina) - The St. Philip and Jacob's Franciscanmonastery in Vukovar was returned on Saturday 3,833 old and rare bookswhich were taken from the monastery after the Serb
occupation of theeastern town in 1991.
VUKOVAR, Nov 20 (Hina) - The St. Philip and Jacob's Franciscan
monastery in Vukovar was returned on Saturday 3,833 old and rare books which
were taken from the monastery after the Serb occupation of the eastern town in
1991.The books were brought from St. John Capistrano's monastery in Zemun,
Serbia, where they had been stored for years.
Expressing joy at the return of the books, guardian Zlatko Spehar said
the Vukovar monastery had about 17,000 valuable books before the war, the
oldest dating back to 1501.
Assistant Culture Minister Branka Sulc said the rest of the works of art
taken from eastern Croatia during the war to Serbia were expected to be
returned by the end of the year.
