ZAGREB, Nov 17 (Hina) - Members of the parliamentary home affairs and national security committee from four opposition parties -- SDP, HNS, HSP and HSS -- on Wednesday slammed their colleague Damir Kajin from the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS) for his latest statements on the case of reporter Helena Puljiz, announcing that they will insist on a parliamentary debate on the Counterintelligence Agency (POA)'s questioning of the freelance journalist as they did not believe that the Office of the National Security Council would do anything to clarify the scandal.

The above-mentioned parliamentary committee on Tuesday entrusted the said office with establishing whether POA agents had blackmailed Puljiz in an attempt to persuade her to collaborate with them.

Four committee members -- Sime Lucin of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Ante Markov of the Peasant Party (HSS), Srecko Ferencak of the People's Party and Pero Kovacevic of the Party of Rights (HSP) -- think that it is illusory to expect of the Office of the National Security Council to do the job as it should have already done so, under relevant laws, but failed.

"If this case is not fully clarified, we shall make a disservice both to security agencies and citizens who may be the target of those services," Markov said at a joint news conference he held with the other three opposition MPs.

The four MPs also pointed the finger at IDS MP Kajin who, according to them, voted in favour of conclusions which the committee adopted yesterday. However, he later denied that he had agreed with the parliamentary majority's members of the committee and told a completely different story to reporters, the four said.

"Kajin made a show and a farce in which he revealed state secrets from the report compiled by the Council for the Civilian Supervision of Secret Services (on the Puljiz case)," SDP deputy Lucin said.

The four opposition deputies also accused government spokesman Ratko Macek of informing reporters of segments of the POA report which they said were also state secrets.

Ferencak of the HNS went on to say that Kajin had revealed his true colours, namely that he was serving the interests of the ruling Craotian Democratic Union (HDZ).

Kajin, who held a separate news conference on Wednesday, said that he "did not vote for the committee's conclusion" that the Office of the National Security Council should be bound to entirely clarify the Puljiz case.

He said that colleagues from other opposition parties should be aware that the IDS would not vote "either for bad government proposals or bad proposals made by gentlemen with whom we have formed a coalition or will form a coalition".

He said he did not want to accept the opposition's proposal that both Puljiz and the two POA agents who had questioned her should take a lie detector test. This would mean, Kajin said, that the POA employees had acted in line with law and this would only prolong Puljiz's agony.

Kajin went on to say that at yesterday's session of the parliamentary committee he had insisted that POA make an apology to Puljiz, and that responsible persons be relieved of duties.

The IDS deputy said he would ask for the publication of the relevant reports of the Council for the Civilian Supervision of Secret Services as well as of the minutes of the committee's session of Tuesday.

Kajin also told the news conference that the POA cited the fact that Puljiz was a close friend of the Hrvoje Petrac family as a reason for calling her for interviews.

Kajin also asserted that the POA agents blackmailed her with a video tape of her sexual intercourse, which the POA filmed secretly.

Asked by reporters whether the revelation of some details of her private life would damage her reputation, Kajin said "the problem is not what Damir Kajin is saying but the fact that somebody has allowed themselves to tape her sexual activity" in order to blackmail her.

The IDS will also insist that the entire case be discussed by the parliamentary human rights committee.
