Last night 's event in Zagreb's Opera Hotel was a part of 'The 1000 Dinners' campaign, which is launched by the Canadian Landmine Foundation and the US United Nations Association, and which runs throughout the year- but this year's Night of 1000 Dinners is on and around the 4th November.
There were 350 guests at the Zagreb dinner, including prominent persons from the business sector, public figures and politicians. The funds were raised from entrance tickets, which cost 500 kuna, and donations given by companies, embassies and individuals.
Zagreb's Night of Thousand Dinners was organised by the US Chamber of Commerce in the Croatian capital and the Canadian and the US embassies in cooperation with the Croatian Mine Action Centre (HCR).
"This is not a charity event but an investment into the future of Croatia, in its people and land," a US chamber of commerce representative, Wade Channel, said thanking for donations.
US and Canadian Ambassadors, Ralph Frank and Stefanie Beck respectively, held speeches on the dangers of land mines.
There are an estimated 70,000,000 mines left in the ground in over 90 countries. The proceeds from the entire campaign '1000 Dinners' are donated to the six worst mine-infested countries, including Croatia.
