BRUSSELS, Nov 5 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Friday voiced satisfaction with having attended a meeting with the European Council for the first time since Croatia was awarded candidate status in June this year.

"I am very satisfied with having had the opportunity to present Croatia's position to the President of the European Council, Dutch Prime Minister Jan-Peter Balkenende, European Commission President Romano Prodi, and the future chairman of the Council, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker," the Croatian PM said after the meeting.

The European Council regularly invites the leaders of candidate countries to its meetings, at which it informs them about the topics of its summits.

Present at the meeting at Sanader's side were also Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic.

Sanader told his hosts he expected Croatia to be given a date for the start of entry talks at the summit in December and that Zagreb was ready to meet its obligations.

"Croatia is aware that it must do all as regards the fulfilment of the Copenhagen criteria, the adoption of the acquis communautaire, and the fulfilment of special criteria," which refer to countries covered by the Stabilisation and Association Process, Sanader said.

The PM then held brief separate meetings with Balkenende, Prodi and Juncker, whom he asked to support Croatia's European aspirations.

This afternoon, Sanader met Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, whom he thanked for Belgium's support, and the speaker of the Belgian Parliament's House of Representatives, Herman de Croo.

De Croo voiced support for Croatia and confidence that the country would be given a date for the start of accession talks in December.

He expressed understanding for Croatia's position with regard to cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal stating that the Croatian government should not be requested to do something that it could not do.

Croatia's flag was hoisted today for the first time in front of the building of the Council of Ministers, where European summits are held, together with the flags of other member and candidate countries.
