BELGRADE, Nov 1 (Hina) - Hague war crimes tribunal chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte's proposal to transfer to Serbian courts the case of former Yugoslav People's Army officer Vladimir Kovacevic, accused of the 1991 shelling of Dubrovnik, Croatia, is very significant for Serbia, the spokesman of the Special Prosecutor's Office for War Crimes in Belgrade, Bruno Vekaric, said on Monday.

"That would be a big encouragement to our judiciary. This is the first time that a case in which the indictment has already been issued and proceedings have begun before the Hague tribunal is being transferred to a court in the former Yugoslavia," Vekaric told Radio B92.

He said the Kovacevic case was not the case whose transfer del Ponte announced while visiting Belgrade a month ago.

"The case which has yet to be transferred has only been investigated," Vekaric said, adding "the case that was investigated is much more complex, more comprehensive and harder for the domestic judiciary".

Del Ponte today proposed to the president of the Hague tribunal, Theodor Meron, that the Kovacevic case be turned over to Serbia and Montenegro courts. Kovacevic was sent to Serbia this summer to undergo psychiatric treatment after the tribunal established that his mental condition made him temporarily unfit to stand trial.
