ZAGREB, Nov 1 (Hina) - On the occasion of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2), Friar Nikola Mate Roscic said a requiem mass in tribute to the first Croatian President Franjo Tudjman. The service was held on Monday in the chapel beside the Altar of the Homeland on Mount Medvednica overlooking Zagreb, at an initiative of the Croatian Cultural Foundation.

During his sermon, Friar Roscic said that tribute should be paid to the first Croatian President and "we have no right to question his life or his decisions, but we must pay tribute to him for what he did for Croatia as an intellectual and statesman". Roscic described Tudjman as "a symbol of a long-standing dream and its coming true through Croatia's sovereignty and independence".

The priest said, among other things, that "in present-day Europe we can see a lack of respect for the Christian roots of civilisation on which Europe was founded".

"We are also aware that many would like to see Croatia become a civil state in which faith would be a private matter for every citizen. We are, however, aware of the importance of the Catholic faith which has had an impact on the destiny of this people, and of the importance of the Church which has helped us to preserve our national identity and true values. We must preserve the roots of Christianity and our faith in order to have a safe future for our country," he added.
