ZAGREB, Oct 28 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Thursday the government decided that the presidential elections be held on 2 January 2005. He said he was informed about the government's decision yesterday at a meeting with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and added he absolutely agreed with it.

"The government has decided that the elections be held on 2 January and my talks with the Prime Minister focused on that," Mesic told reporters after his meeting with Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov in the President's Office.

Asked whether he absolutely agreed with the government's decision that the elections be held on 2 January, Mesic answered in the affirmative and expressed conviction the government would call the elections soon.

Mesic said that there were speculations about the date of the elections and various proposals had been submitted, one of which was that the elections be held on Tuesday which would then have to be declared a non-working day. He said this would cost the state a lot of money.

"At the end, the government opted for January 2," Mesic said.
