ZAGREB, Oct 21 (Hina) - The Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) presidential candidate, Jadranka Kosor, on Thursday would not comment on the decision of the B.a.b.e. women's group to leave the Croatian Women's Network over reported support by the Network's president, Bojana Genov, to Kosor's candidacy.

Kosor told reporters she was not allowed to comment on the matter because that would mean commenting on relations between women's NGOs.

"What I can say is that in my duties so far as an MP with two terms in the Sabor and now as Deputy Prime Minister and Family Affairs Minister, I have sincerely supported women's NGOs and had a truly good partner in and excellent cooperation with them," Kosor said.

She said she had never advocated the notion of woman as a housewife, pushed in the background, but quite the contrary, she was against all forms of discrimination and humiliation of women.

Asked to say whether the Women's Network supported her candidacy, Kosor said that this was discussed at a meeting last summer, but now that she was an official candidate, she could not comment on it and it was up to women's associations to state their position.

She said that as Deputy Prime Minister she supported all activities of women's associations and enjoyed their support, especially in the fight against violence against women.

The proposal which women's associations had been talking about for many years - to declare one day a national day of the fight against violence against women - was adopted during the term of the incumbent government, Kosor said, adding that Croatia was one of the few countries with such a day.

She recalled that as Deputy PM and chairwoman of the Economic and Social Council she had initiated at one of the Council's sessions a special discussion on women on the labour market and that the Council had adopted concrete conclusions condemning discrimination against women and proposed a set of measures to be respected by employers.
