THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Oct 18 (Hina) - The trial of former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic before the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague continued on Monday with a debate on problems relating to a boycott by defence witnesses and ways of overcoming them.

Court-appointed defence attorney Steven Kay of Britain said that about 80 per cent of the defence witnesses were refusing to come to The Hague in protest because Milosevic was denied the right to defend himself on his own.

Kay said that 65 of 138 witnesses had refused to testify on events that had taken place in Kosovo. He added that the list of defence witnesses also contained the names of 21 expert witnesses and 27 international witnesses many of whom were not ready to cooperate.

The possibility of ensuring the appearance of witnesses by subpoena was also mentioned, but presiding judge Patrick Robinson said that the Trial Chamber would use this method only as a last resort.

Kay said that a Communist Party member of the Greek Parliament, Liana Kanneli, was supposed to appear in court on Tuesday to testify about her visit to Belgrade in 1999 during NATO air strikes.

Milosevic has been on trial since February 12, 2002 on charges of genocide in Bosnia-Herzegovina and crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Croatia and Kosovo in the 1990s.
