OHRID, Oct 16 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul said in Ohrid, Macedonia, on Saturday that the Copenhagen criteria were the important factor for countries which joined the European Union in May this year, and that they would be the most important factor for new candidates and aspirants as well.

Zuzul was attending an informal meeting of foreign ministers from western Balkan countries and France, which ended today with the adoption of a joint statement confirming the countries' determination to intensify cooperation and efforts to speed up their Euro-Atlantic integration.

Apart from Zuzul, this position was confirmed at a news conference by foreign ministers Ilinka Mitreva of Macedonia, Kastriot Islami of Albania, Vuk Draskovic of Serbia and Montenegro, and Deputy Foreign Minister of Bosnia-Herzegovina Lidija Topic.

Regional cooperation is based on the principle of fulfilment of the Copenhagen criteria and it is therefore unnecessary to create new rules for the region, however, it is a fact that by cooperating more closely we are helping one another and stabilising the region, Zuzul said.

The meeting was dedicated to what each country should do on its way to European associations and it concluded that every country was a "class of its own" and would reach the finish at its own pace, the minister said.

Stressing that the foreign ministers attending the meeting had welcomed Croatia's progress, Zuzul said that there was obviously a time difference between the countries and that Croatia was entering the final stage, Macedonia was making progress, while other countries were in the preparatory phase.
