The chairman of the Croatian Parliament' Committee on Human and Minority Rights, Furio Radin, and members of the committee held talks with the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI). The ECRI is a body operating within the Council of Europe. It was founded in Vienna in October 1993.
This is the third visit of an ECRI delegation to Croatia. The visit is aimed at collecting data for a report on the situation in the country regarding racism and intolerance issues. The latest ECRI report, drafted in 2000, highlights the problem of discrimination in the process of the return of refugees and restitution of property. The report also said it was necessary to intensify measures aimed at reconciliation and the building of trust, the statement said.
Radin said the parliamentary committee was dealing with laws and issues concerning human rights and the rights of national minorities and stressed that its objective was to create necessary legal conditions for the full respect of human and minority rights.
