NEW YORK/PHILADELPHIA, Sept 20 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader received an honorary degree in jurisprudence, the highest academic award of Philadelphia University, in Philadelphia on Monday.

University president James Gallagher said at the presentation ceremony this award was given to state leaders for building peaceful coexistence and supporting good education in the 21st century.

Gallagher said the honorary degree was also credit to Sanader for his contribution to Croatia's development and the strengthening of relations between Croatia and the United States.

In his acceptance speech, Sanader said the honorary degree was an acknowledgement of his and his cabinet's leadership of Croatia on the road of democracy, rule of law, respect for human and minority rights, and the social market economy.

Sanader went on to say the honorary degree did great honour to him and all who stood behind his policy, and was another proof that the Croatian government was on the right path.

The Croatian PM added he was pleased to receive this honorary degree in Philadelphia, which he said was the cradle of U.S. independence.

On Wednesday, Sanader is due to attend the annual United Nations General Assembly session.

The Croatian delegation visiting the U.S. includes Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul.
