NOVIGRAD, Sept 17 (Hina) - The Croatian government and the Finance Ministry will continue supporting initiatives aimed at improving the situation on the domestic capital market either through privatisation or through the issuance of government bonds, Assistant Finance Minister Ante Zigman said in his opening remarks at a conference of the Federation of Euro-Asian Stock Exchanges (FEAS) in the Croatian town of Novigrad on Friday.

The organiser of this year's biggest regional conference of stock exchanges is the Zagreb Stock Exchange, which is a founding member of the FEAS.

Zigman reminded that the Ivo Sanader cabinet had decided to accelerate the privatisation process, which would result in an additional amount of securities and shares on Croatian stock exchanges and give new impetus to this market.

Next week the government will issue 300 million euros from the third installment of ten-year government bonds, and the funds collected in this way would be used for the payment of bonds which are due now.

As the government decided not to use samurai bonds in compliance with the new stand-by arrangement it made with the International Monetary Fund, further debts would be incurred on domestic markets, and therefore new bonds could be expected by the end of this year, he added.

The Novigrad meeting focused on the FEAS activities in the next year, its restructuring and cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in developing a code of business practices.

The FEAS consists of five stock exchanges from Europe and Turkey and 20 stock exchanges from the Near East and the Far East.

Four new members -- stock exchanges from Abu Dhabi, Belgrade, Sarajevo and Banja Luka -- were admitted to the Federation at this event.

Besides the FAES's gathering, a conference of leading information technology companies in the stock and financial services, including Hewlett Packard, Computershare and Italian SIA S.p.A, is taking place in Novigrad, too.
