VALKENBURG, Sept 4 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul arrived in Valkenburg, Netherlands, on Saturday to attend a working lunch with the foreign ministers of 25 European Union member states and three other candidate countries.

This is the first EU ministerial meeting to be attended by Zuzul after Croatia was awarded the status of a candidate for EU membership in June this year.

During the last round of enlargement, the EU Council introduced the practice of calling representatives of candidate countries to informal ministerial meetings, which are held twice a year. Ministers, prime ministers or heads of state of candidate countries are invited four times a year to attend EU summits.

Outside the Chateau St Gerlach in Valkenburg, the Croatian flag was displayed for the first time alongside the flags of all member states and candidate countries.

Speaking to reporters before the working lunch, Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot expressed hope that negotiations with Croatia on full EU membership, which are due to begin early next year, would be completed as soon as possible.

The Netherlands currently holds the six-month EU rotating presidency.

The informal meeting, which opened on Friday, was called by the Dutch EU Presidency to discuss a number of foreign policy and security issues. On Saturday morning, the ministers exchanged their views about future relations between the EU and the Union of Serbia and Montenegro, and about Kosovo.
