By 2050 Europe's population might go down eight percent from this year, by 668 million, while the U.S. population will go up 43 percent, an increase of 419.9 million

Nearly 99 percent of the increase in population occurs in poor countries, while wealthy countries record a decrease. Only the United States among the main industrialised countries records a high increase.

In Europe, only France, Great Britain and Belgium are likely to record a population increase by 2050.

The population of Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal will decrease, as will, in even greater numbers, the population of Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland.

By 2050 population in industrialised countries will go up four percent, as opposed to a high 55 percent in developing countries.
